Introduction

Company Background

Google Inc. is a multinational company based in United States, which offers various online services and software. Internet advertising is the main source of revenues generation for the company. Google used AdWords as a primary advertising technique for profit maximization. Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the two students of PhD at the Stanford University found the Google, due to which they are also popularly known as the popularly known as the "Google Guys." Initially the Google has emerged in the market as private company on September 27 of 1998, following its first public offering that has taken place on August 19 of 2004. At the time, the company's mission statement from the outset was "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful".

In the year 2006, Google has moved, after a rapid growth in the business, to its current headquarters in Mountain View, Santa Clara County in the state of California (Springer, 2009). Today, Google has large data centers spread around the world and equipped with more than one million servers that serve over one billion search requests by nearly 96 percent of the total internet users and twenty thousands terabytes of user-generated data every single day. Since its incorporation, the rapid growth achieved by the Google has resulted in the introduction of variety of other products, business and technology acquisitions, and affiliations, the scope of which goes far beyond the core operations performed by the Google, i.e. search engine. In addition, Google also several other online tools and services including office productivity software tools and one of the world's popular and widely used web-based email program known as Gmail. Furthermore, Google has also extended its operations in the area of social networks that has resulted in Orkut, Google+ etc. Google also offers desktop applications such as Google Chrome which is among the most popular web browser today. Other popular services of Google include photos editing program Picasa and instant messaging tool popular known as Google Talk (Springer, 2009).

Recently, Google has also started focusing on operating systems and leads the development of a popular operating system for mobile platforms named Android, which is used in phones like the Nexus One and Motorola Droid. According to the statistics, Google is the most visited site in the world. Google was also ranked by the Fortune magazine as the fourth best place in the world to work and as the most powerful brand in the world by BrandZ. The leading market position of Google's products also caused the company to be a target of criticism from different sections of the society on issues such as privacy, copyright and censorship (Davis & Iwanow, 2010).

This paper aims at exploring the Google advertising including famous AdSense and AdWords programs, while discussing the different aspects of programs in order to build an understanding of how the programs work to benefit the Google and other companies.
