UN Decade for Education for Sustainable Development

In December 2002 the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution 57/254 proclaiming a United Nations Decade for Education for Sustainable Development (DESD) from 2005 to 2014. UNESCO has been requested to lead the Decade and develop a draft program application for the International Decade. This document is this application and is the result of extensive consultations with United Nations agencies, governments, organizations civil society and NGOs, and experts and specialists. Starting with an initial consultation with its system partners United Nations in September 2003, UNESCO has extended across Global consultation on a framework for developing the Plan International implementation.

Over 2,000 submissions were received, many of which represented a synthesis of hundreds. The project has been widely circulated and discussed by academics and experts forefront in this area before being introduced in July 2004, the Committee high level for the Decade, which advises the Director General UNESCO on this subject. The paper was presented at the fifty-ninth session of the UN General Assembly, then the 171 Executive Board of UNESCO.

It then lays out seven strategies for moving forward education for sustainable development, and describes how this range of partners can contribute on the basis of contexts of their own. For readers not familiar History of the Decade or education for sustainable development will need to refer to Annex I of this document, which gives a Brief summary of key trends as well as other information important in this context. The International Plan of Implementation should promote ownership Group of the Decade for Sustainable Development. This document describes procedures in hopes of stimulating the imagination, creativity and energy necessary to ensure the success of the Decade. It is envisaged that regions and nations to develop plans, approaches strategic and calendars based on the framework provided by this Plan International implementation.
