Database and how does it differ from a File System

A Data base is considered as a collection of information which is organized in a manner that can help a computer program to easily choose the required data. Data base works a s an electronic filing system.

Technically, data base and file system both support the fundamental features that are necessarily required for data access. But, there are some critical features that are not supported by file system in order to manage data. These features include transaction support, fast indexing, snapshot, clustering, replication and rational view of data. Lack of these features slow down the retrieval and access of data. Replication supposed to be as a commodity combined with databases to develop the basis for supporting disaster-recovery plans. But file-systems are still unable to manage it. It is highly required for the file systems to evolve and offer such facilities that can relate to various data-sets. In this way, the applications writers will be able to utilize the basis of file system abilities in order to relate data (Ullman and Widom, 2010).

Data independence: it is required for application programs to remain independent from the description of data storage and representation. The DBMS offers an abstract view of the data for the insulation of the application code from these descriptions.
