Cultural Interview and Nursing

Selection of Culture

The culture which I have selected for interview is American Indian widely known as Indian Americans or Asian Indians. I have selected this ethnic culture due to its increasing influence in U.S. The American Indian culture is increasing with high speed due to professionals and intellectuals are coming to U.S. seeking better growth opportunities. Another reason of selecting this culture is that American Indian has the highest literacy rate among all the ethnic background and it is also more than average literacy rate of U.S.

Background of Culture

Indian American people are those people who live in America and have an Indian Ancestry. Population of these people increased from 0.6 of population of America (Year 2006) to 0.9 population of America (Year 2010) and this percentage is continuously increasing (U.S. Census Bureau , 2012). Since these people have an Indian heritage their lifestyle and attitude is also affected from the Indian culture. When one the family from Indian American ethnic background was interviewed following things were observed. Though they belong to Indian heritage but way of living of different Indian families also differs. This difference is due to their ethnic backgrounds. In Indian there are also different culture which prevails. Like Guajarati, Punjabi, Bengali, Marathi etc. Language of these people also differs from each other. When the family was further questioned it was found that religion is also an influential factor in their way of living. The major difference is between the Muslim Indian culture and the Hindu Indian Culture. The common points which were discussed by the family related to the American Indian behavior and culture are discussed in details in the following headings (Das, 2007).

Family Relationship

American Indian families live in nuclear family system. This is the reason they are found to have a sense of caring for their grandparents. Grandparents and grandkids seem to have close bonding which makes them emotionally strong. In a nuclear family system the grandfather and in case he is not there, grandmother acts as the head of the family. They are respected and so are their decisions.

Language

Language of American Indian families depends upon the region of their origin. They are found speaking Guajarati, Punjabi, Bengali and Hindi. They also speak English but most of the time their casual communication at home and in friends are in their local language.
