This paper discuss about the program which could improve post abortion care services in 22 out of the 33 public sector district hospitals. These hospitals provide services in Guatemala from July 2003 to December 2004. The basic function includes strengthening the knowledge and technical capacity of staff. This paper also highlights the post abortion care provided by the staff. A healthcare facilitator monthly visits each district hospital to provide abortion care services. Throughout this period, 1,928 women with partial abortion were admitted in 22 public sector district hospitals. The use of physical vacuum aspiration for partial abortion in the first quarter increased 38% to 68% of cases (p <0.0001). It also increased the provision of family plan counseling, 31% to 78% of women (p <0.0001), and the proportion of women who chose a contraceptive method, 20% to 49% (p <0.0001).
