Drug Free Techniques for Surgery

Introduction

Surgeries can cause pain and anxiety among patient and these are the two factors that most of the people want to avoid. That is the reason why most of the people seek alternative drug free techniques for surgery. In this connection dental surgeries are the most painful experience of surgeries people can have, however, there are certain ways to avoid dental surgeries which includes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), hypnosis and acupuncture. Using any of the mentioned technique individually or in combination with another, patients can avoid such painful dental surgeries. This study will attempt to explore the alternative drug free technique as an alternate to dental surgeries. How do people deal with running pain without resorting to drugs or surgery? This will look for options beyond the obvious such as rest, ice, and traditional physical therapy - an option that many, though probably not enough patient consider, or at least not soon enough. The study will explore what else people can rely on to get rid pain and anxiety.

If we want to identify one single approach as an alternate to surgery, this study will firstly discuss all three drug free therapies, which are acupuncture, CBT and hypnosis. (Covi, 2006)

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a healing technique used in traditional Chinese medicine. It uses very thin needles to stimulate particular points on the body. These points lie on energy pathways called "meridians." Acupuncture is the premeditated treatments to improve the flow and equilibrium of energy along these meridians. Traditional Chinese medicine has existed for at least 2,500 years. The acupuncture considers the human body as a system of energy flows, when these flows are balanced, the body is healthy. Practitioners take their patients' pulses and examine their tongues to diagnose energy imbalances. In Chinese medicine, pulses can be taken at three positions on each wrist and three deep at every position.

The disease is not defined by symptoms or the name of a disease like "HIV." In contrast, a Chinese medicine practitioner will talk about energy imbalances. The language can sound very strange, like "yin deficiency" or "liver heat rises." The Chinese words yin and yang refer to opposing energies that should be in balance, and "Qi" (pronounced "chee") can be roughly translated as energy or life force. In traditional Chinese medicine there are many ways to improve the balance of the body's energy flow. The most ordinary techniques used in the western world are exercise techniques such as Qigong or Tai Chi, acupuncture and herbs. (Hayes. 2003) Many Chinese medicine practitioners specialize in acupuncture or herbalist and very few use both methods.

How acupuncture can be used?

It is based on the inequality of energy; an acupuncturist will select acupuncture points to stimulate the energy points. Patient needs to lie on a table face down or face up. Needles are inserted at selected points, while inserting the needles a patient can feel a little pain, tingling or numbness. The needles stay in ...
