Introduction

Many ESL students have studied English for years and possess greater explicit knowledge of the structure of English than the average native speaker does, yet they still lack the ability to produce and interpret meaning at the university level. Similarly, ESL students generally have difficulty reading extended English text with an eye for identifying main ideas and supporting details. Although they often scrupulously decipher each sentence, in doing so they may overlook the overarching message of the text and the connections among ideas.
