European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) - European Foundation for Quality Management - was founded in 1988 by the then fourteen leaders of the European economy, and approved by the European Commission. The overall objective of this organization was to accelerate the acceptance of quality management as a strategy to achieve global competitive advantage. Apart from international companies (ABB, BASF, Daimler Chrysler, Hewlett-Packard, Nokia, Siemens, Xerox) in the list are also members of the EFQM local, national, and research institutes of Europe's leading research institutions. Rather than recommend a single method of improving the company, the foundation has developed a universal model based on the experience of several major European companies. The EFQM Excellence Model is a comprehensive and powerful tool to improve the organization. It covers all major areas of the organization and spells out what the requirements should be met in these areas. Thanks to this model, it serves as a comprehensive self-assessment tool and also a model of excellence to be achieved by taking action in each of the highlighted areas. Self-assessment of the organization realize its strengths and to identify areas to be improved. The EFQM Excellence Model does not dictate or suggest solutions, but allows many approaches to achieving sustainable excellence in all aspects of the organization (Huyink, 1994, pp. 13).

Benefits of applying the EFQM model

The Excellence Model is a guide, a framework, not prescriptive, which provides the basic criteria on which the excellence of the organizations and highlights good practices with which any organization can face. It consists of 9 criteria articulated them with logical links between cause and effect, with a dynamic structure very similar to the well-known PDCA. Born in 1991, the EFQM Excellence Model has undergone several upgrades over time, the last of which was launched in early 2010. The EFQM model points the way to build an excellent management system: the model is in fact: - a practical tool that provides a holistic view of an organization (i.e. where the "value" of the organization is given by the synergistic interaction of all its components, aimed at a common goal),
