Endometriosis

Abstract

In this paper we will be discussing Endometriosis in a detailed manner. First of all we will provide an introduction and the definition of endometriosis and then we will discuss it in detail. This paper will provide the nature of disease along with its complications, causes, symptoms and diagnosis. Finally we will conclude our paper

Endometriosis

Endometriosis is defined as the presence of "functioning" endometrial tissue outside its normal situation? the uterine cavity. This property of ectopic endometrium is responsible for the manifestations of the disease. Traditionally? endometriosis has been subdivided into two categories: (Gompel 2005) adenomyosis (endometriosis interna); involving the myometrium and classical endometriosis (endometriosis externa); the term generally used to describe extra-uterine endometriosis. Adenomyosis is a pure gynaecological disorder which is now considered a separate entity? both histogenetically and clinically? and will not be discussed further The actual prevalence of endometriosis is difficult to determine because laparoscopy or laparotomy is required to make a definitive diagnosis (vide infra). (Barbieri 2006) In a recent review? the estimated prevalence was at least 10% in women of childbearing age. (Gompel 2005)

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (the endometrial stroma and glands? which should only be located inside the uterus) is found elsewhere in the body.

Endometriosis lesions can be found anywhere in the pelvic cavity: on the ovaries? the fallopian tubes? and on the pelvic sidewall. Other common sites include the uterosacral ligaments? the cul-de-sac? the Pouch of Douglas (Barbieri 2006)? and in the rectal-vaginal septum.

In addition? it can be found in caecarian-section scars? laparoscopy or laparotomy scars? and on the bladder? bowel? intestines? colon? appendix? and rectum. But these locations are not so common.

In even more rare cases? endometriosis has been found inside the vagina? inside the bladder? on the skin? even in the lung? ...
