Environmental Poisons that can affect Humans

Abstract

This paper discusses how everyday products are harming human health. Humans are coming in contact with toxic chemicals and materials through household products (Risdahl, 2001). Detergents, deodorants, and household cleaners may appear to be harmless but have a grave impact on human conditions that are increasing incident of birth abnormalities, breast cancer in women and low sexual development. Efforts are in place to counter the threat. Experts are also devising preventive measures keeping in mind the products and goods that we use every day. It is essential for individuals to break free from the knowledge that have about popular products.

Introduction

Contacting little quantities of poisonous chemicals may not be fatal to your health you or leave you unwell straight away, but the harmful effects of environmental toxins and poisonous chemicals can build up with the passage of time and eventually damage your health. Avoiding contact with such hazardous chemicals can enable you to live longer and lead a better life.

The hazardous effects of insignificant amount of toxic waste can easily be found out even after several years. Generally, occupational ailments provide insight into environment-related toxins. Workers that have jobs in a hat manufacturing facility are exposed to mercury that was present in tools and needles that are used to prepare hats. In today's era, scientists have been able to identify that exposure to materials such as fiber dust, cotton, coal, inhaling asbestos and tobacco can result is diseases such as cancer. These materials can also reduce the ability of lungs to function.

Causes

Many of us feel that we live a clean environment in our houses. The same can be true regarding workplaces. In reality, residents and employees are often exposed to toxic materials that are generally considered to be harmless. These materials or chemicals are present in everyday products that we consume. They are used in food manufacturing, farming products and consumer products. An example of this hazard are two chemicals polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) which are used widely as fire-resistant chemical additions in commodities like foam padding, beds, stools, couches and other furniture (Elliot, 1999a). The fire-resistant materials are also found in human beings and in mothers' milk all over the world. Pollution from these materials is causing critical issues for human health. The materials used to prevent fire found in human bodies are affecting general public health as they reduce functionality of glands that control flow of blood in the human body. The chemicals are also hampering sexual growth among individuals (Hood, 2006).

A CDC research shows that almost 82 people lose their lives each day as a result of unintentional poisoning. An even greater number, 1941 people, are taken for emergency medical attention to be treated from accidental poisoning.
