Discussion

Learning will not occur until you reflect (Rolfe G Freshwater, 2001). The incident discussed below reflect my experience demonstrating essentials of caring. This incident happened two years ago when I was appointed as a trainee in to a surgical ward as a part of my nursing practice. It was a Monday afternoon when an old man I would call David was brought in to the surgical ward unit in an ambulance from home. He was a 67 years old man and was in severe pain. Later, I was told that he had been suffering from osteoarthritis and was admitted for a hip replacement surgery.

His son Robert told me that his father had been suffering from osteoarthritis from last 6 years. He told that his father was no longer able to stand for long hours due to severe pain. His father is now a socially isolated person. David was constantly screaming in pain. I looked at David's face which looked so painful that I couldn't resist myself. I gently stroked his hair and assured him that we will take care of everything and he needs not to worry. I tried to relieve his pain by talking to him about his concerns and anxiety till the doctors came. He was so much in pain that the doctors had to give him some pain-killers.
