Accounting and Finance Degrees: Is the Academic Performance of Placement Students Better?

Ian Surridge wrote an article on Accounting and Finance Degree in 2009 which we will discuss in this section. The author tried to study the factors affecting performance of finance graduates. He studies factors like placement, gender, prior academic achievement and course type. By placement, author means to say that student's having professional experience of working anywhere have any relation with the performance of finance graduates. The author discusses the various issues in pursuing this research. The literature on the relationship between placement and academic performance was not significant. In addition to this problem, there is no proper standard for measuring the performance of the students, which creates issues in assessing the relationship between such variables. Moreover, the previous studies covered different levels of examinations, instead of the results of last few semesters, when an individual starts job hunting.

The study concluded that the performance of the placement student was far better than other students. Prior performance of the student was also directly related to a strong academic performance of the student. However, it was found that it was difficult to determine the performance of a student with factors like prior performance and gender. There were other important factors too that played a vital role in a strong performance of finance students, including Motivation and Personality. Placement had a major impact on the performance of the students as it gave the student the required skill and experience to succeed.

It is important to understand that students have little experience when it comes to carrying out research study, so they not only require motivation but also need the right guidance necessary to develop a dissertation. The university must also give access to various Research Libraries of the world, so they can conduct research and study on different matters.

The biggest problem that universities must sort out is the lack of student's ability to analyze and evaluate data. If students develop this ability, than things would be far better for finance students and they will be at far more ease when carrying out studies on finance topics. They must also increase their knowledge on current financial markets in order to ...
