Abstract

The paper identities one of the major ethical problems faced by the Army now days which is fraternization that exists between soldiers and military personnel of different ranks. The paper also explains the term fraternization in context of military and how it is used in many different forms for example it compromises the standing of different officers, as they are placed at a higher level of authority and leadership. The paper also highlights the importance of morals and ethics and how they play an integral role not only in our society today but also in different kinds of profession. The paper outlines the problems of fraternization between enlisted personnel and officers in the military and how it has been present since the time of Roman military law. An important issue is also discussed in the paper that even though a personal relationship that may exist between Military members is of personal choice but how do they tend to become an official concern when they lead to the degradation of discipline, respect for authority and morale. The research also recognizes that fraternization is described as a violation under the Uniform Code of Military Justice and falls in Article 134, with a definition given by the Manual For Courts-martial. It also covers the main gist of the offences which are in the violation of predetermined customs that the armed forces have set against fraternization. It also provides a broader view on problematic it was to use UCMJ/MCM as the basis of charges, as it only focused on warrant and commissioned officers. The paper also outlines the policies that were determined to take actions against any unprofessional relationships.

The common opinion and suggestion of the Army's policy on fraternization and relationships between soldiers of lower and higher ranks, is that it needs certain changes which can be implemented through revision. The Army is also very curios to find out that what changes and influences will improve it. Fraternization is generally considered as an unprofessional relationship that may exist between an enlisted member and officer, which may have a higher potential and probability to damage discipline and morale. It is important to find out the meaning of the term morals, as every soldier has to value and highly prioritize the morals involved in the department of military. The term moral in military involves the description of what is right or wrong based on the conscience of the higher officials.
