Introduction

The focus of this assignment is to analyse the care given to a patient on haemodialysis. It will attempt to explore the physical, psychological and social needs and to identify whether the care delivered met the individual needs of the patient.

The Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Conduct cites that nurses should "protect all confidential information concerning patients obtained in the course of professional practices and make disclosure only with consent". To adhere to this ruling, the pseudonym "Gloria" is used to identify the patient in this study.

Organisation of Care

Systematic planning of nursing care is a high priority, as nurses seek more efficient ways to provide quality care (Bower 1977).

A nursing model provides nurses with a framework of reference, a pattern of thoughts and actions, which enable them to make explicit the art and science of nursing (Wright 1990).

Rigdon (2002) mentioned the components of nursing practice; assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. She said that it must be used to ensure a systematic approach for delivering the very best level of care to the patient. The Dialysis Staff Nurse collects and analyses the data to identify actual and potential health care needs to determine the priority of care goals. The Dialysis Unit uses the Activities of Living (AL) Model devised by Roper, Logan and Tierney. Pearson et al (1986) cites that the essence of this model is that all individuals are involved in activities, which enable them to live and grow. Roper et al (1986) developed this philosophy of nursing into a model, which focuses on the activities people engage in to live. This is related to the Dialysis Unit Strategy and Philosophy of Care.

Roper et al (1986) recommends using the Activity of Living as a framework for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care. Roper et ...
