History of American Football

The first American Football League was created in 1926 by Charles C. "Cash and Carry" Pyle, Red Grange's agent-manager. After Grange's successful postseason tour with the Chicago Bears, Pyle hoped to get a National Football League (NFL) franchise in New York. But the New York Giants refused to waive their territorial rights, so Pyle set up a rival league. The Rock Island Independents moved from the NFL to the AFL and new teams were established in Boston, Brooklyn, Chicago, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Newark, New York, and Philadelphia.
