The May Fourth Movement

The May Fourth Movement derived its name from the student-led nationalist demonstration that spread from Beijing to the whole country in mid-1919(Jean, 1995), a critical moment in the warlord period (1916-1928) of modern China. However, nine decades after this epoch-making event, its connections with warlord politics have not received serious scholarly attention. This is in large part because of a general assumption about the anti-imperialist and anti-warlord nature of the movement. A systematic examination of this long neglected issue is imperative for a thorough understanding of both the May Fourth Movement and warlord politics in modern Chinese history.

New Culture Movement

New Culture Movement in the early 20th century Chinese cultural, by a group of Western-educated (then known as the new education) who initiated a reform movement. May 4, 1919 on the eve of Chen in the editor of the "New Youth " published an article advocating democracy and Science (Mr. Science and Mr. De), criticized the traditional authentic Chinese culture, and dissemination of Marxist thought; the one hand, Hu Represented by the moderate, is opposed to Marxism, to support the vernacular movement, advocated pragmatism instead of Confucianism, is the Origin of the New Culture Movement. (Goodman, 1995) During this period, Chen, Hu Shi, Lu Xun, who became the central figure in the New Culture Movement, the movement and become a leader in the May Fourth Movement.
