Introduction

Human resource management is one amongst the most significant departments of an organization. The overall performance of the organization is actually based on the strategy adopted by, perspectives employed by, and performance of the human resource management department of that organization. This is for the reason that human resource management entails hunting for the talented and competent human resources, recruitment and staffing of the human resources, and post recruitment activities including the imbursement, rewards, performance measurement, health assurance, incentives, training and development, compensations, etc.

For achieving its objectives, it is exceedingly significant for an organization to incorporate such a structure which pursues to support the key values of cooperation, respect and trust. The business organization, in carrying out its activities, seeks to pose a positive influence on the stakeholders, communities, employees, consumers and the organizational environment. This paper presents a report on the human resource management and perspectives as employed by the Primark and comparison between 2 Primark stores, one with an HR and one without and HR.

Company overview

Primark is the UK's fifth leading clothing retailer that originated as an Irish clothing retailer. In June 1969 Arthur Ryan opened the first Penneys store in Mary Street, Dublin and within a year, four more stores were developed in the Greater Dublin area. By 1973, Ireland had 18 stores and this further expansion and success dictated the move to the United Kingdom where Primark (as branded in the UK) began trading with four out-of town stores. The following year saw the opening of the first UK High Street stores in Derby and Bristol. Over the next ten years, 9 stores were opened in Ireland and 18 stores were added in the UK making the number of stores in Ireland and the UK 22 each. From 1984 onwards several acquisitions took place for Primark with companies such as BHS One-Up, stores from the Co-Op (Reading), C&A, Allders, and Littlewoods stores by ABF plc. Associated British Foods (ABF) is Primark's parent company which is a “diversified international food, ingredients and retail group with sales if £11.1 billion and 102,000 employees in 46 countries” (ABF).

From 2006, Primark began to expand greatly throughout Europe, and as of 30th April 2012 they now have 38 stores in Ireland, 156 in the UK, 26 in Spain, 3 in the Netherlands, 5 in Portugal, 7 in Germany and 1 in Belgium bringing the total to 236 stores (Primark Stores Limited, 2012). Primark has a “no frills, no gimmicks ethos” according to Arthur Ryan. It produces and supplies clothing with style and quality at affordable prices by paying close attention to catwalk trends and creating their own chic and cheap versions. Primark prides itself on providing its customers with up-to-the-minute fashion at affordable prices and also has numerous brands throughout the store to cater to many different tastes.
