Human sexuality and its psychological impact

Introduction

Sexuality is absolutely central to Sigmund Freud's account of human psychic life. According to Freud, the single most important motivating force in adult life is sexual energy or the libido. Sexuality can be defined as any form of pleasure which is or can be derived from the body. Due to the nature of our environment, it is essential, but never entirely satisfied. It is for this reason that Freud investigated the consequences of repressing impulses in order to live in society. The topic chosen in area of human sexuality is decrease sexual desire in women and its psychological impacts on their life. Today, women are more likely to earn a diagnosis for not being 'hot for it' 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Critically analyze the research evidence surrounding female sexual dysfunction and evaluate the extent to which this condition is a problem that warrants physical and psychological treatment.

Discussion

The female libido is an elusive and misunderstood creature. Years ago cruel double standards saw women with high sexual desire labeled as fiendish nymphomaniacs but nowadays there is rapidly growing prevalence of women complaining the opposite. The problem of lacking sexual desire affects many women and definitely is a disorder worth treating (Douglas 1998). If diagnosis is correct and the causes are examined and understood, then appropriate treatment can be carried out. The impacts for an individual woman's lack of sexual desire may vary quite significantly from the next, as causes can be as different as the individual. Generally the causes of inhibited sexual desire are divided into 2 main groups: Chemical factors and Psychological impacts. Firstly chemical factors, being exposed to any chemicals at work, socially or as a hobby can be detrimental.

Any medications or recreational drug use including alcohol can also affect sexual desire. Drugs such as the neurotransmitters Dopamine and serotonin, antipsychotic, anti-anxiety and antidepressants have also be associated with decreased sexual drive in women. But this is only been found in clinical practice and no empirical research has been conducted for example these grounds of belief are not as solid as a placebo controlled double blind study. Often several factors interact to create a situation of low sexual desire is widespread belief among sexual therapists that most impacts of lacking desire is psychological, rooted in anxieties (Barbach 2003). The majority of desire-phase dysfunctions are rooted in profound sexual and marital conflicts, as opposed to less complex problems with arousal and orgasm.
