Implication of the recession in the construction Industry in Northern Ireland

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Almost half the companies in the construction sector in Northern Ireland have made layoffs in the 12 months to October last year, according to a report released today. (Spencer 2008, 39) The Construction Industry Council "Impact of the recession in construction professionals", paper presented at Stormont details recent research conducted by the ICC and construction skills include the current and future economic climate and its effect on a wide range of professions such as architects, civil engineers and quantity inspectors. (Siklos 2009, 37)

Statistics show that the recession has affected the construction professional services (CPS) drive. A total of 46 percent of companies had layoffs CPS contributing to the National Bureau of Statistics of the results of a 400 percent increase redundancy for construction professionals between November 2007 and November 2009 with the architects and builders the most affected. (Solomon 2008, 15) In addition 54 percent of companies had experienced a decline in its revenue share in the 12 months to October 2009. (Parkin 2007, 28)

Aim of this paper is to talk about the effects of the recession on the construction sector, as the housing market has also slumped in Northern Ireland.

CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEW

The recession has adversely affected the labor market. The kind of paid work decreased to 72.4% in stage 09-Nov2009, the smallest since the 1996-1997 winter below 0. 1% in the last quarter. The International Labour Organization (ILO) predicts that the rate is higher by 8.7% this year, with 2.8 million unemployed, returning to the unemployment figures of the last stage envisioned in the 1990's. (Siklos 2009, 37) A long-term plan to develop the profession needs to be made. Requirement would be less than it has been in the past 10 years as the promise for economic development has considerably lessened than last couple of years. (Parkin 2007, 28) The study ended and the conduct accrued for this study is vital for trade to realize the hardships that actually hinder economic development and design for building a prosperous and sustainable future trade. (Schmitt 2003, 10) The research done and the evidence compiled for this report was crucial for the industry to understand the problems that currently hinder economic growth and plan for a successful construction industry and sustainable future. (Kaj 2008, 18) The is expected to continue into recession this year, but fall far short of the activity was witnessed in 2009, before returning to modest growth in 2011. (Jackson 2008, 12 )
