Individual Emergency and Crisis Work to the Incident of 9/11

Introduction

September 11, 2001 a dreadful day in the history of America where an American Airline Boeing 767 was hijacked by Islamic extremist group Al- Qaeda. All these attacks seized more than 3000 people live including the rescue teams of firefighters and police officers. The whole incident took 102 minutes and the history of America was changed and the whole world looked on in horror. The momentous of 9/11 saw the worst loss of lives illustrating a horrendous picture of fired buildings, collapse of huge structure, no doubt a moment of shock, chaos, disbelief and retreat in America (Dowd, 2012).

Person Centered Therapy

Person Centered Therapy was developed in 1950's by Carl Roger. The therapy was developed by Carl with the intention to take the clients seriously and provide them with the opportunity to share their feelings and diagnose the effective modes and therapies to help them recuperate the factual value of life (McLeod, 2008).

Client Problem

The therapists have been found using the person centered approach and its relative techniques extensively in the 20th century for the people affected by the aftermaths of 9/11 incidents. The incident of 9/11 inflict serious emotional and mental trauma on the people's mind as the incident was extremely tragic and it was for the very first time in the history of America where thousands of people lost their life simultaneously. The incident shook the whole Nation and the distress was felt by the people across borders.

The person centered therapy considers the clients the most effective therapist. This therapy believes that all what a client covet is a warming, understandable and genuine attitude of therapist while providing the counseling and best psychotherapy to the affected individual (McLeod, 2008).The therapy believes that while facing the trauma the victim want the therapist to listen and understand the point of view of the client. In addition to this the client are treated with great respect and regard in this treatment. Their feelings are respected and the therapist tries his best to transparent and congruent.

Goal of treatment

The treatment program of person centered treatment comprised of rich and complicated processes. The two major goals of treatment in person centered therapy are to increase the self esteem of the client and relatively increase their openness to experience (McLeod, 2008).Once the client share their deep rooted feeling and distress, the therapist try to increase the self understanding of the client and lower their level of guilt and insecurity which they have gained from the 9/11 incident.

Therapeutic Process of Person Centered Therapy

The three key ingredients to execute effective person centered therapy are Congruence, Unconditional Positive Regard and Empathic Understanding if these three ingredients are effectively met during the counseling session with the victim then the process of psychotherapy can be successfully established (McLeod, 2008). Despite these three elements the process of therapeutic comprise of few distinct stages.
