Abstract

The starting point for good diversity management is valuing and celebrating difference as an asset because everybody is different and unique: everybody has strengths and weaknesses. Through good diversity management based on these values and celebrating difference, employers can access unique mixtures of talent, skills and experience that can make valuable contributions to business performance. Managing diversity strategies may include providing programs to increase awareness for example for cultural diversity, trying to improve positive attitudes toward groups differences, understanding the view points and relations among different groups, being flexible in communication, and freely expressing concerns ,confusions and frustration when facing for example cultural obstacles.

Introduction

Globalization is a phenomenon that is in vogue nowadays. In this rapidly changing world, to succeed it is imperative for an organization to adopt the phenomenon of globalization. On one hand, globalization cultivates scores of benefits for the organization. On the other hand, it also generates various dilemmas for management. This phenomenon of globalization presents challenges of understanding and managing different facets of cross-culture. According to Stephen Roberts: “Culture is the framework in which we communicate”

This suggests that various factors give rise to the various problems of cross-cultural. These factors include language, environment, technology, social organization, the perception of authority and nonverbal communications. Having the ability to assess these variables is vital in ensuring for managers to convey messages and conduct business across a wide range of cultures.

In this paper we will discuss about an international construction company that has been contracted to build the tallest skyscraper in the world in Rio De Janeiro. The financing services are contracted from Dubai, the materials are imported from China, the engineering and technological services are contracted from Germany, and the labor will be hired locally with management from the United States. However, managing such a culturally diverse team has many challenges including culture, language, tradition etc.

Discussion

Cultural Diversity in workplace is becoming more and more prevalent. The companies in all industries are encouraging minorities, women, older workers and people with disabilities and foreign workers to join white men in workplace. The following analysis will focus on these groups and how companies are being encouraged to participate in workplace in constant expansion. Even if affirmative action is dismantled, diversity of workforce is clearly here to stay.

Different Business owners and managers, as said according to experts, still have to maintain or increase efforts to recruit and promote minorities in year 2010 and beyond. That's basically because it has diverse workforce and effectively manage is simply good business for different companies.

Many companies now span globe and / or outsource certain aspects of your day to day business, which makes it important for cultural diversity at top of each list of companies.
