Introduction

Jihad is one of the most misunderstood and most distorted concepts of Islam. There are some Muslims who exploit this concept and make bad use of it to achieve their political ends. There are many non-Muslims who misunderstand the concept. Other non-Muslims give a distorted interpretation in order to discredit Islam and Muslims (Esposito, 2005). Jihad is to protect the faith of the individual and his rights. Jihad is not always a war although it can sometimes take this form. Islam is the religion of peace but that does not accept oppression. Islam teaches that one must do our utmost to eliminate tension and conflict (Esposito, 2005). Islam promotes peaceful means to bring about change and reform. In reality, Islam emphasizes that we must strive to eliminate evil through peaceful means without resorting to force as much as possible (Wigen, 2009). In the history of Islam from the Prophet - peace be upon him - until now, Muslims have, in most cases, resisted oppression and struggled for freedom by means peaceful and nonviolent (Esposito, 2005).

Islam also teaches proper ethics in war. War is permitted in Islam, but only when other peaceful means such as dialogue, negotiations and treaties fail. War is the last resort and should be avoided as much as possible (Esposito, 2005). Its purpose is not to convert people by force, or to colonize people or to acquire land, wealth or fame of any kind. Its fundamental purpose is to defend people, property, land, honor and freedom, both for oneself and for other people who suffer from injustice and oppression (Esposito, 2005).

Jihad is an essential concept of Islam. In Western languages, it is often used as a correlate Islamic concept of holy war. Islamic Jihad is the name used by many groups of Islamists or Islamic fundamentalists armed. The organizations are placed on the official list of terrorist organizations of the United States of America (Esposito, 2005). The first appearance of the Islamic Jihad is the claim of the attack which targeted the U.S. embassy in Beirut in Lebanon on 18 April 1983, made by some "Islamic Jihad Organization" (Wigen, 2009). The same group also claimed the double suicide bombing of 23 October 1983 against the American and French barracks in Beirut, respectively, on the Beirut International Airport and the Hotel Le Drakkar (Esposito, 2005).
