Differential Diagnosis of Addictive Sexual Disorders Using The DSM IV

Sexual disorders have been described by the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM IV). These are characterized by and include features that urge sexual behaviors. There are common disorders which include paraphilias and impulse disorder. Besides this, they also include cyclothymic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and adjustment disorder. The disorders that are addictive do not fit in the standard categories of DSM IV and can be easily diagnosed by using the adoption of the criteria for dependence on substance (Irons & Schneider, 1996).

Mental disorders have been classified since long in medicine, but agreement with regards to disorders that should be included in optimal method are not agreed upon. Development of many nomenclatures has taken place during the past two millennia with regards to phenomenology, etiology and the other features. Advances in diagnosis of mental disorders have been represented by Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders after conducting much research. Increases in erserach led to the development of DSM IV to diagnose the mental disorders, psychological syndrome and the other patterns that occur in the human beings because of distress. However, this also includes disability, increased risk of suffering from pain or death. Conflicts between individuals and society are mental disorders until the conflict is because of the symptoms of dysfunction.

There are significant risks that have been foreseen because there is a probability that the information will not be used properly and misuse can occur. Moreover, clinical diagnosis of a DSM-IV is also not sufficient for the purpose of establishing legal purposes of a "mental disorder," "mental disability," or "mental disease."
