Leadership and Influencing Practice

Introduction

Whatever the dimensions of global governance, however renewed and enlarged its machinery, whatever values give it content, the quality of global governance depends ultimately on leadership. (Barnatt, 2005) Throughout our work, we have been conscious of the degree to which the realization of our proposals depends on leadership of a high order at all levels. As the world faces the need for enlightened responses to the challenge, more people are concerned at the lack of leadership over a wide spectrum of human affairs. At national, regional, and international levels, within communities and in international organizations, in governments and in non-governmental bodies, the world needs credible and sustained leadership. (Beyerlein, 2004)

Correctional leaders must pay careful attention to correctional basics and that chief executive officers and other senior officials must define the values, beliefs, and operating principals of a correctional institution so that everyone, even inmates, knows and understands what's expected of him or her in daily activities. (Brown, 2006) Effective leadership depends on organizational consistency, and achieving it is in the hands of the warden. Leaders must also have strong organizational values that they pass to their employees and reinforce with strategic, positive activities.

Discussion

The role models for leadership in both business and franchising are Bill and Bonny LeVine, founders of Postal Instant Press. With respect to franchising, Bill and his late wife Bonny were the ultimate champions of diversity and inclusion. Long before franchise relations was embraced and became trendy, Bill and Bonny "walked the walk," working tirelessly to build the strongest of bonds with their franchisees. (Deci, 2000)

Perhaps the key to Bill and Bonny's success in franchising was and remains the fundamental conviction that successful franchisors are those who return to their franchisees, each and every month, a multiple of the royalty and advertising contributions those franchisees remit. With respect to business, Bill always seeks "win-win" investments and relationships. He is incredibly generous with his time and advice. There could be no better partner. (Emery, 2002)

Bill Rosenberg was always a strong voice in promoting the interdependent relationship between franchisee and franchisor. His statement that "you can't have a successful franchisor without successful franchisees and you can't have successful franchisees without a successful franchisor" made more sense to me than anything else about the franchise relationship. While simple in appearance the message is extremely profound. Our company has and continues to operate with the mission statement of growth through mutual benefit and it was inspired by Bill's belief. (Gustafson, 2000)

An inspiring leader is someone who pays attention not first to their goals but first to their physical, mental and emotional state. (Barker, 2003) To inspire others they need first of all to be an inspiration to ...
