Leadership Models

Introduction

Leadership can come from an individual, a group of people or even disembodied features - if not mystical - a figure well-known (compared to a hero).There are other uses of the word leadership without active leadership, but to which followers show great respect (often derived from tradition) (compared to the courtesy title reverend).

Followers often attribute to the leader of a status or prestige. Besides the prestige, role sometimes granted to the leaders of opinion, the use of the word leadership can be used to characterize the influence between competitors, for example within a company or a market economic or technical, without it there is continuity of leadership. There may be occasional or situational leadership. Thus we can make an important distinction between being in command and leadership process. Leadership implies a relationship of the power to direct others to a particular time or in specified circumstances.

Leadership is essential for managers, especially with globalization and decentralization of decision-making authority of managers in medium and large enterprises. This mechanism of globalization mean that the ability to conduct business without having in hand the power to rally and bring people together and direct them towards a direction would be almost impossible. The leadership has in common with the beauty that recognizes without difficulty, but we can hardly define. Some define leadership as the function of guide and influence others and bring them to meet ambitious targets. For others, the leader is a coach that trains individuals to be assisted them in carrying out its duties.

Leadership models

Leadership models study different elements such as the leaders, some researchers focused more on what leaders do to lead, and the effects they achieve in the working groups, leading to develop several models. The different models of leadership have focused on the the various characteristics that make managers successful leaders in authentic work groups. Different models and theories of leadership help to differentiate between leaders and non-leaders. (Hooper, and Potter, 1997)

Contingency Model

Contingency Models of Leadership study in a new light: that is, the circumstances surrounding the leadership process and in which it develops. As advanced studies of leadership, researchers realized that the prediction of success of a leader was a much more complex phenomenon to identify suitable personality traits or behavior of the leaders preferred winners. (Tannenbaum, and Schmidt, 1958)

A leader who is successful in certain areas and circumstances will not necessarily elsewhere, with another group or another time. Hence, more than 30 years another stream of research was devoted to studies in order to propose a model that takes into account such factors as the type of work that the leader, group size, maturity, degree that requires the participation and cooperation of members of the group, etc. The decision to move forward on the continuum towards democracy had to take into account the leader's strengths, the strengths of the followers and characteristics of the situation. (Tannembaum and Schmidt,1958)
