Parental involvement is supposed to be one of the great issues in ensuring learning success for brood. And while proponents of the "No Child Left Behind" law assert that rising parental involvement will resolve the problems meet by low performing schools it seems, perhaps, that the confront facing low income parents which may add to their lack of contributing in the learning of their children are over and over again overlooked. Rather than continue to criticize the low-income parents as indifferent "slackers" Perhaps all would be a thorough examination of the obstacles to greater participation and development of potential solutions that will enable parents and teachers work together to overcome these obstacles. A study by the nonprofit organization Computers for Youth, found that one of the main obstacles to greater participation by low-income parents simply lack of time. Often forced to work several jobs or take the night shift because of an increase in income resulting from the shift differentials, low-income parents tend to have little free time to participate in school activities, homework assistance to children or parents and teachers conferences. In middle-class parents with a regular 9 to 5 schedule and paid vacation and personal time, it's just me to attend evening events at my child's school or request an hour or two of personal time each semester to attend parent-teacher conferences during the regular school day . It is easy to forget that low-income parents work several jobs with constantly changing work schedule and little flexibility with respect to time, have no such luxuries. (Rogers JL, Boruch RF, Stoms GB, DeMoya, 2004) Other practical tasks may include such things as lack of transport and lack of care for the child and other children in the family. For parents on low incomes without a car and living in areas where public transport may not be widely available to get to school events and conferences can be extremely difficult. While the average income of a parent may feel nothing taxi to go to school when a personal vehicle is not available, we must remember that this simple act can be prohibitively high costs for parents with low income in a very limited budget.
