Management Structures and Cultures

The different management structures used by organizations are bureaucratic, functional, divisional and matrix, depending on the nature of work and organizational climate. According to Feitelson & Faddad, (1998, p.3) the organizational structure directly affects the culture of the organization. Bureaucratic organizations are very rigid and clear hierarchical structure. Decision making is very slow and communication takes place from top to down, while, communication in functional organizations flow in the horizontal direction. On the other hand, divisional groups are totally independent and have no relation to the other groups in the organization. Matrix organizations have slow decision making and communication flows in all direction that includes upwards, downward and horizontal.

On the whole, organizational structure directly affects business performance. Centralized organizations have steady performance and clear set of rules. Decision making is slow due to tall hierarchy and introduction of change is often encountered with resistance. On the other hand, decentralized organizations have greater scope to improve their performance due to their flexibility. Decision making is slow but, employee satisfaction and retention is very high.

Influencing factors

1. Extrinsic factors

These are monetary benefits like pay, bonus, increment, cash allowance etc.

2. Intrinsic factors

Intrinsic factors include non-monetary factors like job satisfaction, job security, work culture, appreciation, recognition etc.

Both factors directly affect the performance of individuals. However, the importance of influencing factors varies for different individuals.

Approaches to management

Different managers use different approaches to management (Jackon, 2004, p. 12). The most common management styles are:

Democratic

Under this approach, managers delegate authority to their subordinates and the work style is not closely monitored. Employees are totally responsible and accountable for the quality and completion of their job. In addition to this, employees are also consulted in the decision-making process so that the quality of decision-making improves.

For instance, when company chooses a contractor it gives maximum freedom to contract workers to complete the project provided that the general code of conduct is complied.

Autocratic

Autocratic managers don't take advice from their subordinates or co-workers. Decision-making is usually quick but, it decreases motivation and job satisfaction as employees are not consulted for their suggestions (Ledbetter, 2003, p.1).

For instance, sales representatives should be given the daily sales target without taking their advice.
