Introduction

Management Development is best described as the process from which managers learn and improve their skills not only to benefit themselves but also their employing organizations. In organisational development (OD), the effectiveness of management is recognised as one of the determinants of organisational success. Therefore, investment in management development can have a direct economic benefit to the organization. Managers are exposed to learning opportunities whilst doing their jobs, if this informal learning is used as a formal process then it is regarded as management development. In 2004 the spend per annum per manager on management and leadership development was £1,035, an average of 6.3 days per manager.

Interview

The manager that was interviewed was Beth Dainov manager in a relatively new asset to the mid-sized Philadelphia law firm of Stradley Ronon Stevens & Young, LLP, has truly been making her mark within the company. Dainov , the Public Relations Coordinator, is responsible for a number of significant tasks.

Purpose

The purpose of this interview was to shed light on the management development process and what is the role a manager plays in a successful management development.

Confidentiality

For confidentiality purposes the name of the manager was changed so was the place where the manager worked and other factual information which could result in the breach of confidentiality. A copy of this report was also provided to the interviewed manager.

Beth Dainov is a writer, teacher, and consultant specializing in strategy and policy for businesses and social sector organizations. She has consulted with many of the world's largest corporations as well as with non-profit organizations, small and entrepreneurial companies, and with agencies of the U.S. government. She has also worked with free-world governments such as those of Canada, Japan, and Mexico. She is the author of thirty-one books which have been translated into more than twenty languages. Thirteen books deal with society, economics, and politics; fifteen deal with management. Two of his books are novels, one is autobiographical, and She is a co-author of a book on Japanese painting. Dainov is known as 'the father of modern management' for his pioneering work in the 1940s and 1950s, including the concept of management by objectives, which is fundamental to effective business management.
