Background of the Study

Motivation plays a vital role in enhancing and encouraging the enthusiasm of employees. Motivation has now become a key issue in a number of human resource studies. Motivation is considered to the catalyst for the enthusiasm of employees. An increase or decrease in the motivation level of employees is directly related to their performance. In order to encourage employees to work without stress, it is imperative to motivate them.

In order to motivate the staff, the normal practice at Primark is to say thanks to them. It is because when employees are encouraged for their efforts, they exhibit effective performance. At Primark, appraisals are used to assess the performance of employees. However, this practice is only limited to employees on probation. The process of performance appraisal is carried out supervisors since they directly observe the work of employees. Managers do not carry out the process of appraisal because they are not directly involved with the observation and evaluation of Primark's staff.

The study would also help in identifying the current level of staff's motivation at Primark. The study would allow Primark's managers to devise and implement effective techniques that increase the motivation of employees.

It is intended that the findings of this research would be useful for local companies in identifying and evaluating different factors that motivate employees. The findings of this research would be useful in increasing the motivation of staff members.
