Portrayal of psychoactive drug use, abuse and addiction
This movie is the portrayal of an eminent and prolific musician Ray Charles. The most controversial issue of his life was his addiction to drugs. So this drug addiction is also shown in the movie. The life of Ray Charles was not an easy life. His life was full of struggles and complications. His life reflects professional triumph and personal turmoil. He suffered from many mishaps that range from family trauma that was so troublesome for him to his blindness at the age of 7. All these misfortunes led him to have the taste of drugs and he became addicted to drugs. There are several scenes in the movie that has shown this addiction of Ray Charles.
The movie reflects Charles's addiction to heroin. During the early part of his life he was forced to heroin addiction. His addiction to drugs was a great threat to his career. The movie presents various scenes in which Jamie Fox has portrayed Charles as an addicted person. According to Erich Goode addiction can be defined as follows:
“Medical practitioners, surgeons, doctors and philosophers attach the word addiction with every drug that someone ever took. While there are few drugs that do not possess the properties that make an individual addicted” (Goode, 2007)
