Abstract

The paper focuses on the comparison of Nordstrom's Hr policies and practices. Nordstrom was founded in 1901 as a single shoe store of the Swedish immigrants founded John W. Nordstrom and Carl Wallin in Seattle. Human Resources activity is underestimated, looking like an administrative function, with a reactive character. Human resource makes sure that organizational culture is clearly defined and changes accordingly. HR plays its role by communicating properly between employees and management. The human resource work is to identify whether the employees in a manufacturing company can meet the production requirements and their ability to maintaining or sustaining the quality of the product. Human resources is a vital part of an organizational setting, it also found that the integration of human resources with other departments and the strategic planning of the organization were neglected. Human resource managers and operational vice presidents are often very different, yet they need each other to function effectively. Recruitment and Selection are the core components of Human Resource Management system that is responsible for each and every employee's conduct and behavior. Human resource is the back bone of any organization and if employees are not managed properly then it is a chance that organization will not be able to work in the long run. An organization's overall HRM system will not be successful if first line managers do not know how to implement HRM practices. Human resource management is the function that aims to achieve an effective and sustainable match between company employees and jobs, in terms of numbers, qualifications and motivation.

Introduction

The paper focuses on the comparison of Nordstrom's Hr policies and practices. The paper also describes why Nordstrom's HR policies are distinctive and what those factors are which makes the company best. The paper also discusses HR practices conducted in other companies. The Nordstrom, Inc. is a US-based department store - and shipping store chain. The headquarters and most important flagship store are located in Seattle in the U.S. state of Washington. Nordstrom operates in the upper price segment, with competitors like Bloomingdale's, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Lord& Taylor (Swanson, 1995).

Nordstrom was founded in 1901 as a single shoe store of the Swedish immigrants founded John W. Nordstrom and Carl Wallin in Seattle. It took 22 years when it was added to a second shoe store. In 1928, John moved back to W. Nordstrom out of business and transferred his shares to his two sons. It took another 31 years until the business had expanded to eight stores in two states. In 1963 the company began to sell only shoes and clothing.
