Nursing Management Critical Incident Analysis

Introduction

After doctors, nurses are the most important people in the hospital. They are responsible for looking after the patients and treating them. For the same purpose, they should be able to develop leadership skills in them because there are times when they have to take decision themselves because there is no doctor available. They should have the skills that are required for being an outstanding leader. Following the code of conduct and taking decisions when the doctor is unavailable are the two strategies that the nurse can undertake for effective leadership. It is the responsibility of the hospital to conduct training sessions so that these skills are developed. There are people, who have leadership skills in them, but they need a bit of grooming; therefore, the hospital should make sure that trainings are provided to such people. Leadership skills are very important for almost every nurse so that they have the decision making power in times of need. The ability and desire to continue to learn is identified as important for staff nurse leaders. Several authors consider commitment to personal and professional standards of excellence, respect, and honesty as antecedents for leadership. Reflecting the interrelatedness of nursing work, leaders must be able to communicate effectively in order to influence others, and thus communication skill is noted in the literature as an additional antecedent.

Once a nurse has been given the responsibility of leadership, he, or she should be able to manage their sub-ordinates properly and should also stand by the decisions taken. The leader should act a role model for its sub-ordinates and should have effective management and communication skills (Tomey, 2009). One important characteristic of a leader should be openness to change. This is very important, especially in today's dynamic world. Whenever an individual suffer from any sort of illness he or she relies on health service providers. Various members of the health care setting play their part in improving mental and physical well being of an individual.
