Introduction

There are several factors that are responsible for the shortage of nursing workforce around the world. The characteristics of these factors range from the instructional features to remuneration concern. Hence, a credible plan must be constructed in order to sort any concern regarding the nurse-to-patient ratio anomaly. Today, the U.S is facing a nursing shortage. This shortage projects to worsen so that by the year 2020 the RN workforce will be 20 percent lower than that needed to fill demands. When an RN workforce shortage exists a concomitant effect on LPNs and LPN employers since both serve a vital complement to healthcare delivery and both make up a significant percent of persons on the healthcare team. RWJF and AARP recognize that it will take leadership and sustained efforts across national, state and local levels to fulfill the promise of the IOM report.

More than 70 national organizations are connected to the campaign through CCNA's Coalition and Council. The campaign is working through state Action Coalitions, powerful partners in seeking change at the state and local levels, where a groundswell of support is rapidly taking shape in demonstrable ways. In the present critical shortage employers must design increasingly flexible shift options so that nurses can get time off for vacations, to enjoy their children's breaks and vacations in their school schedule with them, and to accommodate parents with childcare interests and needs. The profession of nursing is a critical component of improving health care; it is a priority for RWJF. The Foundation has committed $300 million to transform the nursing profession over the past 10 years, and plans are underway to announce additional new programming in response to the IOM report.

Nursing Shortage Concerns Enlightened by RWJF

Nursing shortage is the shortage of other staff that includes various allied health professionals, secretaries and support staff. Shortage of other staff is adversely impacting on the role of nurses in healthcare provision since nurses have the closest and continuous relationship with the families. Nursing shortage reduces the quality of healthcare services given to patients. This indicator is based on organizational transfer and controlled wastage within the organization like redeployment and redundancy, retirement and employee voluntary wastage (Clark, Clark, 2003, 49-57). The record of investments by RWJF in the healthcare industry has sponsored several healthcare programs and researches that are aimed for the betterment of the nursing welfare and a remedy for the growing concern of nursing shortage. It supports programs for doctors, dentists, nurses and other professionals; initiatives for front-line health workers; studies that build an evidence base; and projects that elevate best practices.

The Foundation seeks collaborative, multi-disciplinary approaches and considers diversity a guiding principle (Basic, Conforti, 2005, 104-116). New nurses face difficult moments in their first year of practice in the acute care setting, forcing them to quit.
