Abstract

Increase in competition in every industry has made it necessary for organizations to consider and improve their operation management strategy. This demands the identification of issues in operation management and how companies can use information system to cover those issues. For this study Petroleum Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited or Pertotrin has been selected. The study has focused on logistic problems that are one of the major issues of operation management of the company. The study after thorough analysis of the operation management process has reached to the conclusion that Pertotrin has a better chance to retain their current employees and also gain a competitive advantage for hiring and choosing the right candidate for job at organizations. Keeping a close check and maintaining an overall board of quality assurance, which shall only be dedicated to maintaining the quality delivered by Pertotrin can greatly improve the course of organization. Secondly, the study has also found that company is not taking benefits from information technology; however, using information system the company can increase the performance of its employees as well as can enhance the overall efficiency of day to day operations.

Introduction

The term operation management can be defined as an area of business administration, which is dedicated, to both research and the implementation of all those actions that tend to generate greater value added products through the planning, organization, direction and control in the production of both goods and of services, all aimed at increasing quality, productivity, improve customer satisfaction for customers and reduce costs. Organizations often used information systems in operation management to increase their overall efficiency and for better management of routine activity. The company that has been selected for this topic is Petroleum Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited which is even referred as Petrotrin.

It is a large national company that is has employees around 5,240. The company drills for undefined crude oil from beneath the earth's surface both on land, and, offshore. The oil is transported via pipelines to the refinery where it is refined in various products. These products are sold nationally and exported to international destinations. The refinery has a capacity to refine 40,000 barrels of crude daily. The problem that needs to be addressed in this topic is refining operations. It will cover the issues of Operations Management and will also highlight the importance of TQM (Total Quality Management. It will be seen that whether the company is handling their operations in an effective way or not. The solutions and recommendations will be provided to the company for handling their operations in a proper way. Therefore, all issues related to Operations Management will be discussed in detail.
