Peacekeeping

Introduction

Peacekeeping forces are composed of its members, and civilians and law enforcing officers (soldiers, police and military officers) who seek peace and help countries under the fire of conflict and war.

Peace-keeping is one of the operations of the United Nations , and the Security Council of the United Nations body is ensures it functions properly. The task of peace-keeping forces is the implementation of peace agreements, strengthening of democracy, promotion of security and stability, and strengthening the rule of law. Also it works to advance development and the promotion of human rights. The need arose with the beginning of the peacekeeping forces in the days of the Cold War era.

How the United Nations works for peace?

The United Nations promotes peace in many ways, directly and indirectly. In cases of apparent or potential conflicts, the United Nations uses ways, ranging from mediation to sending peacekeeping troops. The UN also keeps into account the social and economic as well as political factors that cause wars.

International Peace and Security

The UN has holds the responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security, and it has cooperated to achieve the goal of many conflicts, through Security Council action. It has also made ??several preventive actions, so that disputes do not lead to wars or armed conflicts.

The work to resolve the conflict has to be modified according to the evolution of the conflict itself. The main change came from the 90's, when more than 90% of the conflicts occurred within States in the form of civil disputes rather than taking place among them. Also it has the responsibility to re-establish peace post-conflict.

But there is a concern that keeps erupting often enough and in particular, it is the main dilemma facing the international community; whether or not to intervene to protect civilians in danger. In civil conflicts, the Security Council has authorized peace initiatives and interventions like the operations performed in El Salvador, Guatemala, Cambodia and Mozambique.

Other conflicts, especially those characterized by ethnic violence, like in Somalia, Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia, brought new challenges to fulfill the function of the peacemaking of the United Nations as the Security Council did not run any operations there.

Still, the United Nations' role in achieving and maintaining peace and security has become apparent in missions such as those established by the Security Council to address the recurring crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic , East Timor, Kosovo and Sierra Leone, during the period 1998 to 1999. Also, in 2000 a mission was established to provide support to the peace process between Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Currently, the United Nations seek to focus more on consolidation of peace, because if not peace is not strengthened; efforts to avoid military conflict will not be able to guarantee a sustained and long-lasting peace process. This consolidation of peace is achieved only through the promotion of economic development, social justice and protection of human rights, good governance and the democratic process.
