Introduction

The two areas of skill development that I would like to work on are self-awareness and managing stress. These two skills were identified using the Personal Assessment of Management Skills or PAMS survey. In addition, I made a reflective portfolio of myself. This was used to gauge my competency on nine key areas. I used the SWOT analysis to identify my strengths and weaknesses and also took input from my peers and associates. As a consequence of using multiple tools of skill assessment, there were conflicts among which of the skill areas should be chosen for development. In all the assessments, it was found that there was a unanimous agreement that I ranked relatively lower on these two skills.

I have always been interested in the field of Human Resource. I am a people's person and I think I have what it takes to make a successful HR person. In particular, I believe my personality assessment is very good. My long term goal is to get to a position of Senior Recruitment Professional (Stephens, 2011).

Development of Skill Areas

The most valuable asset of any organization no matter where it lies on the product service continuum is the people who work for the organization. Hence, all organizations are looking for quality human resource and fight for the most talented pool of people to be inducted into their firm. This has also led to the increase in the importance of role played by human resource professionals in organizations. A very important quality of any HR leader is self-awareness. This skill, which is often underestimated, is the essence of effective leadership. Self awareness means that a person in question has complete knowledge of himself, his strengths, weaknesses, personality, moods, patterns of choice, style and others. It is this knowledge that determines the way a leader will behave and interact with the people around him. Self awareness is such an important concept in leadership because it is through this that a leader can influence the situation at hand. A leader has to have great control over himself; only then would he be able to take charge of things (Sur, 2011).

A study of leaders who possess and demonstrate self awareness and those that reflect a lack thereof revealed that the leadership skills of the two groups differ significantly. Leaders who display self awareness know exactly what needs to be done in relation with a certain problem. They not only work themselves but take the people who report to them on board and communicate to them the need for a certain action. They know how to maintain a balance between empowerment and stepping in. In every situation, the key point for a leader is for people to accept him as a leader.
