Proposed Poetry

“An Old Soldier” is a motivational and inspirational writing that encourages readers to lead their lives in a contented manner. The poetry consists of sixteen stanzas that are inter-related to each other. The poetry follows the tercet style with three verses in each stanza. The Haiku formatting further supports the nature of the writing to elaborate the ideas and concept. Purpose of Poetry

The central character of the writing is an old man who is retired personnel from the army and now leads a solitary life with no family. This poem is helpful in learning many important experiences and lessons from the life of an old man. This poem teaches us to help others irrespective of one's own situation. This is exemplified by the old man who even at his age goes out and assists others in whatever capacity he can. Hence, the poem seeks to inject motivation amongst individuals and to encourage them to move forward and accept the hardships of life as one of its essential features (Edwards, 2006).

The poem sends out the message that helping others helps us to pick our own selves up, heal us, and most importantly, creates a sense of self-motivation and self-actualization (Smith and Smith, 2008). In any case, the feeling of generosity and the pleasure we feel in giving pleasure to another we dilate the heart. It will help people to get motivation from the story of an old soldier. The poem gives enthusiasm and strength to live a happy life. The Poem “An Old Soldier” reinforces especially old people who think they have nothing to do in their life. Understanding the poem can keep you positive and optimistic towards life (Jacobs, 1993).

Background

The milieu of the poem is the story of a legend soldier who served country's defense for thirty-five years. He experienced seventy-two years life with full of elation and still doing stimulating activities. He is courageous, fearless and dedicated to his country. Then the story illustrates that soldier is all alone and no one left in his family. He has some companions who facilitate him morally. He does not want to live his life without aim and goals that is the reason he keeps himself busy socially. The life of an old soldier is inspiration for other elderly people who give up in their life.

In this poem, the old soldier helps needy kids, which gives him immense satisfaction (Neill, 2006). He has learned a lot from his army career and he applied those rule throughout his life. He can control his emotions when he misses his son and wife because he is strong and psychologically controlled. This poem will give readers enthusiasm, and motivation to fight with unusual circumstances (Jacobs, 1993).
