Impact of Poverty on the Mentally Ill

Poverty is rightly becoming a major focus of global, regional and national initiatives. GIP calls for recognition of the key role of good mental health in poverty reduction, and deplores the absence of mental health concerns from policy-making and action on the socioeconomic determinants of health and prosperity. GIP also advocates a range of actions at all levels aimed not only at alleviating suffering but also at prevention. Cost-effective medical treatments can help individuals and families rise out of poverty. A variety of therapeutic and social measures have proved effective, including psychological help for unemployed people to re-enter the labor market, and supported employment for people with severe mental illness or learning disabilities. Action is also needed at community, national and international levels to tackle inequalities - requiring social and structural changes to create healthier, fairer and more productive societies. Not only the individual person must be the focus, but also the social situation, processes and structures with which the individual interacts.

Poverty as a Social Pathology

Poverty has been identified and labelled a key component of segmentation amongst individuals. Whenever deliberating and discussing about the whereabouts of how a society evolves, the line of poverty needs to be considered and comprehended (Bringewatt & Gershoff, 2010).

Bio-Psycho Social Development

Psychosocial development has been a key aspect of consideration in terms of understanding and comprehending the ebbs and flows of how far and wide can societal patterns and the overall society impact the innate, psychological development that an individual may develop. Psychosocial development, in its very essence, means how the person's emotions and brain functioning develop and grow over the passage of time. Poverty, in this regard, can seriously hamper the development of an individual, since basic necessities -food, clothing, shelter, security, etc. -shall come in consideration when it comes to utilizing the available skill sets of an individual (Chin, 2000). On the other hand, with proper economic standing and earning a living, a person that lives a substantial, yet effective lifestyle.

With economic downturns prevalent, individuals who do not have the nerve or the stamina to cope up with the pressures that the individual tends to develop symptoms of visible stress, anxiety and even as critical as dementia or schizophrenia. These disorders can seriously hamper the person's capabilities and his current thought patterns, which could otherwise have an opportunity to exploit his complete set of abilities at the maximum.

People suffering from mental illness since inception

On the other hand, children or adults already suffering from mental illness would rather be a burden on the family, since bearing their emotional, physical and psychological pressures, derived from the attitude, behavior and cognitive patterns with these beings, which are unable to contribute towards helping themselves of their families.
