Principles of Effective Teaching and Learning

Introduction

The techniques for effective learning and teaching have been debated about for a long time. It has been agreed upon as a matter of fact by huge variety of scholars, teachers and researchers, that to the human mind, teaching a new language (other than the one taught from birth), is the most difficult teaching task compared to all the other subjects (Norris, 2006). Language teaching involves four macro-skills, namely reading, writing, listening and speaking (Jacobs, 2006). Often these skills are taken in groups of two, based in their link to one another. Writing is linked with reading, while speaking is linked with listening, because they are both dependent on one another or have a relation to each other.

In order to teach people, i.e. children or adults a new language, these four areas need to be targeted in a thorough manner otherwise the individual is unable to learn the language. This is not specifically limited to the English language, these four categories are essential to the learning of any language of the world whatsoever, German, French, Chinese, Russian, Polish, and Japanese, so on and so forth (Moutsou, 2005).

This particular subject has been the target of researchers for a long time that the best methods for teaching these language and literary skills is identified so as to help people learn, adopt and attain fluency in a secondary language with minimum discomfiture or problems.

Since there has been no agreed upon approach except that the student needs to brush up on these four specific parts, there have been a few 'effective teaching and learning principles' which have been established that would help individuals better target these particular areas.

This paper shall be providing a justification of seven principles that are established for effective learning and teaching.

Learning which is focused on languages dictates paying specific attention to the subtleties and qualities of the language. The attention should not be given only the message of the sentence but its form in both written and spoken manner. The patterns in which it fits and how it can change its meaning and time frame with the addition of for instance, -ed.

Discussion

Many people have tried to find out the perfect principles for teaching language. Following are some of the principles which are agreed upon by most researchers.

First Principle of Effective Learning and Teaching

Personal experience and oral language can cover the distance between written and spoken language

The experience and the language of the students are universally agreed upon to be the beginning point of literacy. If they are developed properly, then it becomes easier for him/her to learn to read and or write the language. However, if this was not the case, then learning to write and read can become an arduous process. The experience of the language taps the two biggest resources which the students possess, that are their experience and the language. It has been seen to be the best method with which ...
