Introduction

Professional autonomy is the ability to handle the full resolution of a problem in a specific area of expertise. Professional autonomy corresponds to the aspirations of many employees who want to develop a new relationship to employment. Professional autonomy allows them to be sought for their expertise and find income security through the loyalty of a select clientele. A study by the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working revealed that 25% of young people entering the workforce would prefer to be employed. This is also the case for 20% of employees in general with specific motivations among executives and retirees (Broer, Nieboer & Bal 2010, pp.391). Professional autonomy is more a matter of motivation and personal positioning than the level of training or experience which an individual tends to achieve. However, Professional autonomy needs to be studied in a much more detail in order to develop a better understanding of the subject.
