Project Management

Introduction

A small area outside a residential building needs to be landscaped. This landscaping would include removing debris and weeds, leveling the ground, creating a walkway from the front door to the road, and creating a small paved parking area on one side of the walkway. Additionally, a garden with perennial flowers is to be developed on either side of the walkway. Finally, at least two new trees are to be planted and a bench needs to be set up near one of the trees. For the purpose of this exercise, this project starts on August 31.

Gantt chart

A Gantt chart is a graphical representation of the duration of tasks against the progression of time. A Gantt chart is a useful tool for planning and scheduling projects. A Gantt chart is helpful when monitoring a project's progress.

A Gantt chart lets you see immediately what should have been achieved at any point in time.

A Gantt chart lets you see how remedial action may bring the project back on course. Most Gantt charts include "milestones" which are technically not available on Gantt charts. However, for representing deadlines and other significant events, it is very useful to include this feature on a Gantt chart.

This is a Basic Gantt chart example. It shows tasks in a Security and Access Control project. Tasks are outlined in two sections. Each task uses a yellow triangle to indicate the start date of the task and a green down triangle to indicate the finish date of the task. Also shown on this schedule are the responsible sub-contractors for the project (in the column labeled R-E-S-P).

Milestones to Determine the Risks

Project management in Destination architecture has its origins rooted in antiquity. The Egyptian landscape, the Great Wall of China, the Panama Canal, Roman roads and coastal buildings are but a few of the examples where construction project management was used (Cleland 1994). The management of architecture projects requires knowledge of modern management as well as an understanding of the design and construction process. Land/coastal construction projects have a specific set of objectives and constraints such as a required time frame for completion. While the relevant technology, institutional arrangements or processes will differ, the management of such projects has much in common with management of similar types of projects in other specialty or technology domains such as aerospace, defense, pharmaceutical and automotive manufacturing (Hendrickson 1989).

Plan to Manage Risk

Generally, construction project management is different from the general management of corporations by the mission-oriented nature of a project. A project organization will generally be terminated when the plan is accomplished and the construction project is complete. According to the Project Management Institute, the discipline of project management can be defined as follows: Project management is the art of directing and coordinating human and material resources throughout the lifecycle of a project by using modern management techniques to achieve predetermined objectives of scope, cost, time, quality and participation satisfaction.

By contrast, the general management of business or Industrial Corporation assumes a broader ...
