Physicians have always known that compliance of the patient with the care plan was an essential element in the success of any care plan. Modern patients are often more educated about their diseases than people were in the past (Andrews, 2008). Today, more time is spent explaining the reason for the care plan. Patients are taught by physicians to understand the treatment offered and are often given choices for care. As the physician-patient relationship is expanding in scope, more physicians are encouraging patients to take control of their own treatment.
