John W. Creswell's book, Research Design, provides guidance in dealing with some of the more difficult decisions that must be made along the way. Creswell's book provides a framework that aids students in learning many of the more difficult 'ins and outs' of the research process. Creswell's book is a valuable tool for either purpose. "John W. Creswell is well qualified to write a book on research design. He is a well-known authority in the field of educational research design and methods. One major theme that seems to run throughout the book is the unique perspectives offered by the two major approaches to research--qualitative and quantitative. Creswell makes an effort to provide some meaningful perspectives on the important differences between qualitative and quantitative research paradigms. This clear distinction between the two types of research and, more importantly, the continuous comparisons of the resulting differences in the stages of the research design process, serve as Creswell's main contribution to the field of research design. One of the unique features here is a thoughtful discussion of whether a particular topic should be selected. Along these lines, criteria are given for selecting topics that lead to meaningful and interesting research projects. Author provides a valuable perspective on the research design process. In short, Creswell's insights are impressive; and my overall evaluation of Creswell's book is positive. Many researchers, both academic and practitioners, would benefit from the disciplined approach advocated by Creswell. This book explores the philosophical underpinnings, history and key elements of each of five qualitative inquiry traditions: biography, phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography and case study. John W Creswell relates research designs to each of the traditions of inquiry and consistently compares each of the research strategies for theoretical frameworks, writing introduction to studies, collecting data, analyzing data, writing the narrative. Qualitative research methods, which use open-ended techniques, such as interviews, to collect data and no statistical techniques to analyze it, provide detailed, diverse insights of individuals, useful quotes that bring a realism to applied research, and information about how different health care settings operate Qualitative research can illuminate the processes underlying statistical correlations, inform the development of interventions, and show how interventions work to produce observed outcomes. This article describes the key features of qualitative research and the advantages that such features add to existing quantitative research approaches in the study of infection control. We address the goal of qualitative research, the nature of the research process, sampling, data collection and analysis, validity, generalizability of findings, and presentation of findings. Health services researchers are increasingly using qualitative methods to address practical problems by uncovering interacting influences in complex health care environments. Qualitative research methods, applied with expertise and rigor, can contribute important insights to infection prevention efforts, and employing standards of quality and verifying results.
