ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The researcher tends to identify this as the opportunity to value the efforts of the teachers for cultivating the ideas and formulating the first move in the context of this project. The researcher would take this opportunity to appreciate the hard work and the patience shown by the staff for providing the world class teaching and research facility as this project would have ceased to exist without their due support.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

GIS is an industry capable of applications within nearly every industrial sector. As the nomenclature of the GIS is designed to render the modeling as per the daily life of the individuals. Daily life here is rendered as crafting applications to facilitate the humans by simplifying tasks such as weather forecasting or traffic repoting. Moreover, GIS also holds its significance due to the fact that it is desiged in a way which is rendered as spatially linked database.

Thus, GIS offers every benefit of database management with the added facet of describing, discovering and displaying spatial relationships. This fact makes GIS an ideal tool to store individual behavior, log events and track movements through an environment. Individuals can be clustered or combined into groups and communities such as neighborhoods, census tracts, cities, counties etc. Economic entities can be considered as functions of employment, members of a larger industry sector or an individual entity with its own behaviors and attributes. In this fashion GIS applications can be tailored to specific intentions of the user. Municipalities, businesses and academic institutes are discovering that GIS is becoming necessary to provide or purchase. The utilization of GIS data structure is also backed by the phenomenon that increases its suitability to not only describe human behaviors, but also monitor and improve the physical accessibility of the areas in which those behaviors occur as in GIS, data can be presented as features (points, lines and polygon) which helps to decipher the subject more effectively and efficiently.

Therefore, users can project data onto maps and incorporate spatial relationships into their analysis. Utilization of well organized information that is presented in ways that facilitate decision-making is paramount in planning and efficient use of available resources. In addressing this subject, the unit of analysis to use will be the seventy-seven (77) Chicago community areas. All the areas will be inculcated into the fold of the study i. e from Oak Prook or Lakeview. Segregation and poverty data from the 2000 census and crime data from the 2010 Chicago Police Department crime report will be used to ...
