3. Project Details

3.1 Lay Summary

Radiographic examination is one of the most common in modern medicine. X-ray radiation is used for simple X-ray images of bones, internal organs, fluorography, in computer tomography, and angiography, etc. Proceeding from the X-ray emission belongs to the radiation, it is (to a certain dose) may have a negative impact on human health. Holding the majority of modern methods of X-ray examination involves exposure of the subject negligible doses of radiation that are safe for human health.

Radiographic examination techniques are used much less frequently in pregnant women and children, but even these categories of patients, if necessary, X-ray examination may place, without significant risk to development of the pregnancy or the child's health.

Radiation protection is also important in modern health care facilities, as well as in facilities with outdated equipment. Most important is the adequate collection of patient's history with the estimate previously made by X-ray studies, history of radio sensitivity as well as other factors that may affect the amount of radiation received.

X-ray radiation is widely used in various fields of science, technology and medicine. X-rays consist of ionizing radiation such as gamma rays or other types of radiation which are emitted by radioactive substances. These rays cause ionization of the material through which they pass. The resulting ionization may lead to DNA damage or death cells. The nature of radiation effects requires an explanation, because people often meet either the fear of exposure, or complacency, that keeps risk assessment, rather than the current understanding of the real risk of exposure or effects.

3.2 Background and Objectives of Study

It is common knowledge that, work in the X-ray departments is related to harmful factors. The most dangerous of all is the X-ray radiation, so radiation protection personnel offices is one of the main conditions of safety and health of workers during radiological investigations. X-rays, as well as other types of ionizing radiation have distinct biological properties. The first effect of the interaction of gamma rays with the tissues of the human body is the appearance of excitation, i.e. ionization of atoms and molecules, followed by rapidly developing biochemical reactions in the somatic and genetic direction. At high single and cumulative doses irreversible changes can occur in individual organs and the body as a whole. (Petty, 2006, 23)
