Introduction

This is a critique of a research article namely, “long-term, open-label study of Risperidone in children with severe disruptive behaviors and below-average IQ”. This research article studies the effect of drug namely, Risperidone, on the patients of schizophrenia.

Research problems, research questions, and hypotheses

The researcher has focused on determining the long-term effects of using the drug “risperidone” to treat children with very low level of IQ and troublesome behavior. The researchers have tried to justify the effect of risperidone on the patient children. This research has made good contribution towards the field of psychiatry in America, because it has studied the long-term effects of risperidone and how can it help the children in recovering from their problem. This research has covered the whole process of how the children suffering from the problem of schizophrenia, the researchers took a large of children and kept them under strict observation and studied the results of the treatment and then they have used the tool of statistical analysis to study the results.

There are no research questions or hypothesis in the research, the research question has not been written clearly anywhere in the paper. The introduction part of the article states that this research has focused on studying the long-term effects of risperidone on the children suffering from schizophrenia, but the researchers have not mentioned the research question(s) that they have used in their study as a guideline. Furthermore, the researchers have not mentioned that whether they have used any hypothesis or not in their research. These things have made the whole research article a bit ambiguous because a reader cannot determine what the guidelines the researchers have used to conduct the research. (Ellen2010) This is a quantitative research and therefore, this research article needed to have some research questions.

Strengths and limitations of the study

The researchers have used a good number of patient children for their research; the usage of a large sample minimizes the possibility of any sample error and allows the researchers to generalize the results in an appropriate manner. (Gomberg 1989)

The research was spread over a period of 48 weeks i.e. over a year and even before that, the researchers made the parents of the children and the patient children themselves. This has allowed the researchers to study the effect of the drug on the children in a period of about one year. (Lester 2005)

The safety arrangements made by the researchers was also very good, and ensured that there was no severe reaction on the patient because of the use of this drug. The researchers arranged a study visit on the seventh, fourteenth, twenty first days, and after every four weeks from the eighth week to the forty eighth ...
