Research Design & Data Production

Overview

The assignment is about the evaluating the research process employed by two research articles in academic journal. The articles are titled ``Working with teachers to promote children's participation through pupil-led research`` by Debbie Burton, Margaret Smith and Kevin Woods and ``WeCan2: exploring the implications of young people with learning disabilities engaging in their own research`` by Mary Kellett from the Educational Psychology in Practice and European Journal of Special Needs Education journals respectively.

Transparency of Research Process

The need to be clear and transparent is the basis of all research projects, whether the data set is qualitative or quantitative. Qualitative seems to be overshadowed by the data analysis of quantitative research methods and its interpretations. For transparency, it is essential for research projects to clearly identify research strategies, selection of participant, and decisions made in collecting and interpreting the data (Ercikan, & Roth, 2006).

Burton et al.

Burton et al (2010) highlight the project aim to identify the experience of involving children and young people in research which can be a vehicle for their metacognition, critical thinking and ability to apply mathematical skills. In addition, it's a means to highlight the collaboration work that can be developed through project work between teachers, educational psychologists and children in mainstream schools.

The aim of transparency in a qualitative research project is to be able to follow through procedure for replication purposes, not just for result duplication, which can be followed with this paper. However, the session notes are brief and gives room for speculation in terms of procedure delivery, dually, it does set out what happened at each stage of the project and the extent of participatory involvement of the researchers. The consistency in the study is the point of how government initiatives have been a driver in pupil led research, which has led to this study in evaluating and promoting pupil led action research, also illustrating collaborative relationships, (Burton et al, 2010).

This paper has taken an interesting topic of issues for a group whose voice is generally represented as a minority. The experience of attending meetings, being heard and the barriers encountered are issues highlighted along with a strategy of a tool to overcome these. It is understood from the paper how data collection was gathered, by whom; it details in brief the aim to collate evidence of meaningful participation; it comments on where support was provided on theme setting and unearthing patterns from findings. Project time scale of four residential weekends', briefs the reader on what took place and the result of a toolkit produced which is vehicle of empowerment and involvement and meaning being represented from a young person's view. There is room for speculation as to how much guidance was provided and to what extent data analysis by researchers' comments influenced the group to judge rich ...
