Role of Charities in Promoting Equality

Introduction

"By the very nature of their knowledge and social concern....some charities are well placed to play a part in public debate on important issues of the day and to make an important contribution to the development of public policy. Others will invariably be drawn into such debate. It would be wrong to think that this cannot and should not happen: it is open to charities to engage in campaigning activities". The main purpose of this paper is to base on the language of David Cameron's 'Big Society' and critically evaluate the role of charities like BAPS charity in effectively challenging the legislations which have either failed to bring improvements in the equality or have caused further discriminations and oppressions under the restrictions of the Charities Act 2011 and other established case laws. The plan of David Cameron for the big society seemed to come to an end with the end of almost 7,000 charities last year. The idea of big society has failed and David Cameron could not bring any change and efforts in the development of big society. Big society has came out to be the most effective and attractive idea developed by David Cameron.

Thus, these organizations follow the equality laws for the purpose of providing the equality to everyone on the basis of gender, religion and sexual orientation.

In terms of equality providing the main legislation and the concept which has been failed is the concept of 'Big Society' by David Cameron. David Cameron has developed an idea of developing the big society which was considered as an effective idea at that time. The idea of Big Society was the flagship policy idea which has been developed in 2010 by the UK conservative Party. This idea has later transformed into the legislative program under the Conservative-Liberal Democratic Coalition Agreement. This plan has been developed for the purpose of creating an environment which can be helpful in giving power to the local people and communities by building a big society. As per the idea, the power will be taken from the politicians and will be given to the normal people in 'Big Society'. There were contrasting opinions of people for this ...
