Introduction

Physical fitness is an essential component of our overall health and well-being. As today's generation of children may be the first in the United States to have a life expectancy shorter than their parents. Low levels of fitness caused by inactivity and poor nutritional habits of many of today's youth may be a contributing factor. The National Association of Sports and Physical Education (NASPE) have also deemed physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle important. It is recommended for the school-age children that accumulate at least 60 minutes and up to several hours of physical activity per day while avoiding prolonged periods of inactivity. In addition, The National Association for the Education of Young Children has emphasized its value within our education system. Yet, within our educational system, the amount of attention towards physical education has declined.

The Government has set targets, shared by the Departments for Education and Skills, and Culture, Media and Sport, to ensure that 75% of children do at least two hours high quality PE and school sport within and outside the curriculum each week by 2006, increasing to 85% by 2008. By 2012, it aims to offer two hours within the curriculum and at least two hours more outside the school day. Multi skill academies are usually held during school holidays or after school hours and introduce young talented people to new sports, identify new skills and help schools and clubs to identify future potential. Delivered by the Youth Sport Trust, 200 will be in place by March 2006.

Kealey Sherwood, Director of Community for St Luke's Science and Sports College and Exeter, writes about some of the exciting projects in place in the city to help young people enjoy physical activities with less than 1,000 days to go before the start of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games, the Rugby League World Cup coming to the UK in 2013, the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, the Rugby Union World Cup in 2015 and who knows even, perhaps, the 2018 Football World Cup, we really are entering a 'Golden Decade' of sport.

Of course it is not only these national events that can inspire and motivate but also the successes we are seeing every day from some of our more local heroes.

It is now the job of people like me, and the other 449 s from across the country, to capitalize on these opportunities and successes to inspire as many young people as possible to engage in physical education, daily physical activity and school sport (Buckley, 2005. 12).
