Being a manager is a big job. In order to be an effective manager, you'll want to constantly sharpen and refine your management skills. If you're not on top of things as a manager, you could start to lose out on business opportunities due to poor employee productivity, a lack of company organization and stifled growth. The good news is that there are many things you can do to improve your skills as a manager.

There are five areas that I would like to improve upon. These five skills are:

1. Time management

2. Change management

3. Communication Skills

4. Leadership skills

5. Stress Management

Time Management

Time management is a set of principles, practices, skills, tools, and systems working together to help you get more value out of your time with the aim of improving the quality of your life. Improving your time management skills can even help you get better results by doing less work, because you're focusing on the things that really matter rather than all the low-priority busywork that just keeps you busy.

According to Forster (2006) time management is a skill that many of us seem to learn through necessity. The problem with learning a skill through necessity is that, more often than not, bad habits creep in and, although the skill may be useful in general, we do not use it to its full potential. Taking the time to read up on improving your time management skills can lead to great rewards.Some examples are:

The elimination of procrastination and avoidance-of-tasks

Easier, quicker, evaluation of your work and abilities

Less worrying about deadlines

More productivity

More relaxation time, and,

Time management is a skill that takes time to development and perfect. It also is a skill that is different for everyone. Your best bet is to try a variety of different approaches until something clicks in your brain and sticks in your routine.

Llen (2001) give some ways to effective time management:

Planning: planning is one of the most important keys to effective time management.

Prioritizing: prioritizing is another key ingredient in the time cookie.

Deadlines: setting personal deadlines is good to the extent that it pushes you to work towards deadlines and make sure you achieve these deadlines before the pressure of the work gets to you.

Contingencies: having contingencies to most plans is a good way to reduce stress. No plan is perfect.

Contingencies can reduce the stress level of a person incase the plan which he or she had made fails due to any unforeseen circumstances. This is one way of fighting stress.
